It’s a funny thing, but over the summer I was able to plan all sorts of games to play with my closet and clothing. And then once the school eyar started, I lost all focus on it. I wasn’t going to get dressed up and I wasn’t going to try new, fun combinations of the clothing that I had. I reverted back to what works quickly and I didn’t care much if it was flattering or not – it fit, it was in the dress code and I wore it. It’s a sad statement from someone who used to try on everything in her closet to find just the right outfit for the next day.

I need some serious intervention in my dress up games. I think I’m lacking in sleep and motivation, because right now getting an extra ten minutes of sleep is so worth it, and I can’t do much thinking about what to wear or how to wear it if I’m trying to grab those last few winks of the night. I’m going to have to get serious about my clothing if I want to feel a bit better about myself. I also feel great when I’m dressed up, so maybe I’ll find the balancing point soon.

Tomorrow marks my first day back at school, and as you can imagine, I’ve spent plenty of time trying to decide what I’m going to wear. It’s almost time to head back to school, but before I walk into the building for the first time, I need to do a serious revamp of my wardrobe. There’s a strict correlation between how many dress up games I play and how much dessert I eat. It works something like this. When I want to play dress up games, I’m feeling slim and healthy. When I’m eating a huge amount of dessert I’m feeling anything but slim and healthy. It’s a paradox. When I play dress up games, my favorite thing in the world is to throw clothing aside as being too big for me now. I want to under grow my clothing.

It’s frankly quite disgusting, but even though I know the gross (but yummy!) foods I eat are causing the pudge my clothes are battling, I can’t seem to stop. If I see that I have clothing that fits and looks okay, I can start working my way down from there. Nobody wants to schlep around all of the time – least of all me.

I’m a dress up games failure. I have a closet full of clothing and I wear almost none of them. It’s all my fault, and I’ll willingly take the blame for the lack of proper attire. The trouble is that the clothing I have isn’t the sort of thing I’d normally just grab to throw on. That’s reserved for jeans and t-shirts. Instead I need to dig around in the clothing options I have available and then find the right styles to suit the purpose I want. If I want to wear something nice, I don’t have an option readily in mind – I have to put it together.

However, in addition to lacking the attention to details required to have a great wardrobe, I’m also short on time in a big way. I can’t find the time to put everything together for a look. Right now my closet is a huge mess. I need to get in there and figure out something to do in order to get it organized. I have a tone of clothing that I need to get rid of the next time I play the dress up games, but I can’t seem to do it. I think though, that having written about my dress up games failure, I’m going to recommit time to take care of it sooner rather than later.

As much as I like dress up games, I don’t like them as much in the winter months. I’m not a huge fan of the cold, and playing dress up in the freezing dressing rooms or having to look at my dry skin in the bright florescent lighting is not a big turn on for me. I had the privilege of being at a pep rally today where the teachers were dressed up like total goofballs. I loved it. I think dress up games are among the most entertaining ways to get people fired up for athletic events or a big test. This particular pep rally was for a big standardized test the kids are taking next week. It might not have made much sense to the more practical of us, but putting one teacher in a cheerleader’s outfit and another in a modified football costume made for a fun afternoon.

The pep rally was led by the goofy teachers in their poorly fitted costumes. They jumped around doing fake cheers and splits and the kids had a great time watching them. Had the teachers been calm, stoic and serious, they would never have gotten the attention of the student the way they did. I have a new favorite dress up game. In the wide world of princess dress up games, I now have a thing for Princess Tiana. Of course she’s not much of a princess in the beginning of the movie, but a case of mistaken identity is perfect for dress up games. Not only does Tiana have some truly beautiful clothing in the movie, she’s also a very strong female character. Even when her mother encourages her to find her own “Prince Charming” and settle down in happiness, Tiana all but rolls her eyes and keeps on planning her restaurant dream.

She’s humble enough to be likable but tough enough to have everything together and really going for her. She’s not spoiled, she’s actually the only one in the latest Disney flick that works hard for what she wants without cutting corners or creating drama of any kind. It’s refreshing. It makes me wonder if there are already Tiana costumes out and available to buy for little girls. I’m feeling a need to buy one for my niece who will most definitely grow up to be a strong little girl.

I have a thing about little girls playing dress up. When I buy a cute costume for a niece or the daughter of a friend, there are only a few of the token princesses that I will consider. After all, have you ever considered how many of the princesses that are included in dress up games are weak and overly willful? They require assistance from everyone and can’t seem to get things taken care of themselves. The favorite princesses – Snow White, Sleeping Beauty and Ariel are the worst – one needed seven men to support her, another waited for a prince to rescue her because she couldn’t contain her curiosity and another gave up her identity for a man. Don’t get me started on Cinderella and her dependence on a fairy godmother and mice.

Of the princesses, I have a handful I like and can readily respect. Belle, the fearless girl who took on an unworthy suitor, rescued her father and learns to love a man for his spirit not his looks is okay in my book. Likewise I encourage dress up games for Mulan and Jasmine. Mulan is a tough girl who goes to war in her father’s place although she is not technically a princess. Princess Jasmine keeps a pet tiger and bullies around Aladdin, her father and his trusted advisor more than a few times. Those are dress up games I can get on board with.

Often we fall into a rut of style, even if we’re not trying to. I’ll admit that I was once a bit concerned with fashion and appearances. I wanted to look nice and I worked hard to put on a good, stylish look every morning. My hair was styled, my make up was on and my outfit was carefully planned. Yet as I grew older, I seemed to leave that careful attention to detail behind when I created a new look for myself – one that’s just a wee bit sloppy.

Most of the time, when faced with a repetitious task, I want to poke a pencil into my eye. Not really, but you know what I mean. I was concerned for a while that paper dolls were going out of fashion. I loved paper dolls growing up and actually have a rather extensive collection of the dolls. Today, paper dolls haven’t disappeared, although I didn’t see them for a few years, they are just mixed in with other games for girls.

Growing up we had a box of dress up clothes. We used it for dress up games, but one of our favorite things to do with the box was to make it costumes for other purposes. The winter is easily one of my favorite times to play dress up games. The winter also means saying so long to high heels for the most part. Finding the right gear for winter is pretty straightforward when it comes to dress up games.

Heavy bottoms. Your pants should be heavy. Buy them a bit looser if you live in very cold areas to accommodate a pair of long-johns underneath on those extra cold days. But cords, heavy khakis and jeans can all get the job done. Heavy skirts are an option, too. If you live in a mild area or are daring, you can still wear those short skirts, but grab some tall boots to wear, too.

Sweaters and sweatshirts. The best thing about winter are the bulky comfortable tops. No other season lets you drag around in a thick sweater and jeans and feel awesome. Throw on some serious boots and you’re not only style, you’re amazingly comfortable as well.

Warm pajamas. And finally, be sure your winter fashions includes a nice pair or two of heavy winter pajamas. You want to be warm and cozy when it’s cold and blustery outside. And a nice pair of pajamas is the best way to do exactly that.
